The Finnish Advanced Microscopy Node (FiAM) is a Euro-BioImaging Node in Finland that is a multimodal and multi-sited research infrastructure. It specializes in providing biological imaging and microscopy technologies and services accessible in Helsinki, Turku, and Oulu.
The Finnish Euro-BioImaging Node practices open-access policy which in practice means that any academic or industrial user is able to use services of the Finnish Euro-BioImaging Node. Contact us to inquire about possibility of using our infrastructure to do your research. The services of the Finnish Euro-BioImaging Node are open to local, national, and international users. The prices and reservation procedures are readily available on web pages of respective imaging core facilities.
In practice, the services of the Finnish Euro-BioImaging Node include open access to state-of-the-art imaging technologies including laser scanning and spinning disk confocal microscopy, super-resolution imaging (STED, STORM, and TIRF), live cell imaging, a vast array of electron microscopy methods (2D and 3D Electron Microscopy, Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy (CLEM), mesoscopic imaging (SPIM and OPT) as well as consultation, instrument user training, and matters related to bioimage informatics.
The Finnish Advanced Microscopy Node operates in close collaboration with the Finnish Biomedical Imaging Node. Together, the two Nodes form Euro-BioImaging Finland, which is on the Academy of Finland’s national roadmap for research infrastructures 2021-2024.
The Finnish Advanced Microscopy Node has three Node partners: Helsinki BioImaging at the University of Helsinki, Turku BioImaging and Cell Imaging and Cytometry, a joint infrastructure at the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University, and Oulu BioImaging at the University of Oulu.
Node partners provide an impressive range of modern imaging and microscopy technologies and expertise, and in addition, they have their own unique imaging specializations outlined below.
Helsinki BioImaging consists of four imaging core facilities (Biomedicum Imaging Unit, Light Microscopy Unit, Electron Microscopy Unit and FIMM High Content Imaging and Analysis Unit) that offer open-access to imaging technologies broadly categorized into light (fluorescence) microscopy, electron microscopy and high-content microscopy.
Helsinki BioImaging is particularly renowned for live cell imaging, electron microscopy including CLEM (Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy) and 3D Electron Microscopy methods, and super-resolution imaging modality STORM (STochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy). In addition they offer High-Throughput/Content Microscopy and Analysis. Helsinki BioImaging research infrastructure is hosted at the University of Helsinki.
Turku BioImaging is an interdisciplinary science and infrastructure umbrella that unites biological and biomedical imaging expertise in Turku, and works actively to bridge imaging infrastructures also throughout Finland. Turku BioImaging offers state-of-the-art imaging technologies, ranging from molecular and cellular imaging, high content analysis to whole animal and human imaging, covering also image data management and analysis. Turku BioImaging coordinates the Finnish Advanced Microscopy Node. Turku BioImaging research infrastructure is hosted at the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University.
In the Finnish Advanced Microscopy Node, the main services provider of Turku BioImaging is the Turku Cell Imaging and Cytometry Core. The unit is an open-access centralized facility, where users receive support to carry out conventional and advanced imaging techniques. Special expertise areas of the facility include several advanced light microscopy techniques and super-resolution imaging.
Oulu BioImaging, a partner of the Finnish Node, consists of one imaging core facility Tissue Imaging Center that offers open-access to imaging technologies broadly categorized into light (fluorescence) microscopy and electron microscopy.
Oulu BioImaging has extensive expertise in mesoscopic imaging of large living and fixed samples that include using SPIM (Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy) and OPT (optical projection tomography). In addition, Oulu BioImaging specializes in a wide range of electron microscopy methods including TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) offering both 2D and 3D imaging as well as offering CLEM (Correlative Light Electron Microscopy). Oulu BioImaging research infrastructure is hosted at University of Oulu.
